Early in December I got an email from a pastor in Dublin, inviting me to join a prayer rally on New Year’s day. In this email Pastor Kevin Fitzgerald from Crosspoint Church asked, if I would consider summoning our Church to meet from 2-4 pm to pray for Irelad on January 1st. Attached was a video clip with a talk from Dr. Edwin Orr that was originally delivered at a National Prayer Congress in the United States.
In his talk on that video Dr. Orr presents a wide range of material from past revivals demonstrating the decisive role of united prayer in all these remarkable moves of God’s Holy Spirit. It is a very interesting and eye-opening talk underlining the statement that Dr. A. T. Pierson made: “There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.”
Looking back at the history of Ireland it is quite sobering to notice that ever since St.Patrick’s days there hasn’t been any nation-wide spiritual awakening on this Island. Ireland has skipped the Reformation and except for some local and small revivals has never experienced a national spiritual awakening. I wonder if the time has come to ask God just exactly for that – to visit this very needy and spiritually dry country with a mighty outpouring of His Holy Spirit? If it is ever going to happen united prayer across all denominational barriers seems to be a prerequisite.
That’s why I decided to open the Nazarene Community Church for prayer on New Year’s Day from 2-4 pm. All Christians from Greystones and beyond are very welcome to come and join in. Let’s lean on the promise from the bible: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2. Chronicles 7,14)
