Every year a team of volunteers from Ireland called the “Barnabas Team” head out to Africa to spend 2 weeks serving God by serving the local communities there. Organized by the Ireland-based organization “Fields of Life” and led by David Stevenson, a member of the Nazarene Community Church Greystones, these teams are involved in “hands-on” mission work. The men of the team are usually involved in construction work of a building, while the women conduct sowing classes for the local women, do children’s work and look after the daily needs of the team. This year’s team is about to embark on their journey on Sunday, 9th of October. At 7 pm this coming Sunday there will be a commissioning service at our church. Team Members from all across Ireland will be gathering to share testimonies and receive a word of commission as well as the prayers of the congregation. Come along and be inspired by the testimonies of some of the members and by the preaching of the Word of God.

I have read many books on prayer, I have visited seminars on prayer, I have organized prayer-seminars in my church back in Germany, but I still feel that I know very little about the power of prayer in my own life. I have just begun to scratch the surface. Prayer is the most powerful tool in the hands of the Church of Christ, and the most neglected. And the more I read about it, the more I get convinced that prayer can only be learned by actually praying, by engaging in it, by seeking God’s face. – That’s what we are going to do this Saturday. From 11 am to 4 pm we will spend Time in prayer. A busload of Nazarenes from the North will join us. Since we started with these prayer days back in the year 2009 God has done remarkable things in answer to prayer: We now have the NTS students (Dustin and Hannah, Ryan and Stefanie) coming to the republic of Ireland, we have a Nazarene Missionary Family (Steve and Annette Morley with their son Matthew) living in Wicklow since June this year. God is definitely on the move in answer to prayer. So come and join us as we seek God’s face in praying for the Nation of Ireland this Saturday.

This Sunday (18th of September) a group of 10 men from the Tiglin-Men-Centre will be visiting our church. It is always a blessing to have them in our worship service and we are grateful for the connection to this wonderful work of God. This Sunday will be a special Sunday, though: two of them will give short talks on how God has changed their lives through the ministry of Teen Challenge. A special offering will be collected for the Tiglin centre during the service. Envelopes for the donations will be provided on the seats. Come and be blessed, and support the ministry of Teen Challenge, giving hope to the hopeless and freedom to those, bound up in addictions.

It’s time to say good buy. Luke Murray, our youth leader, has left in August to study at the Moody Bible College in Spokane, USA. This week Esther Stevenson is having her last week in our church. Next week she will be moving to Edinburgh to study at the Faith Mission Bible College. Both were very much involved in the life of the church and we will miss them a lot. But we are also proud to see them leave to be prepared for ministry. We wish them God’s blessing and grace for their future and will keep them in our prayers.

It was a very busy week at the Naz, especially for those involved in running the Cookery and Craft’s camp. From Monday to Friday some 30 to 50 children were flocking towards the church at 2:30 pm each day, where they enjoyed a great time of playing games, preparing yummy dishes, doing different sorts of crafts, singing songs and listening to bible stories. Every day they were given a bible verse to memorize and quite a few of them were able to recite all four verses on Friday, which qualified them to receive a special price. A dedicated team of helpers led by Betty Stevenson welcomed them each day at the doors, helped them with the cooking and crafting and played with them. On Saturday it all culminated into the Family Fun Day. Most of the kids who attended the camp brought their parents with them, many more families from the neighborhood came, so from 3-5 there was a great buzz in the church. The bouncy castle was put up inside, as were all the other game stalls. While the kids were enjoying the games and competitions, some of the parents could relax in a corner and have a cup of tea and a nice chat. It was by far the best Family Fun Day that I have experienced in that church (which doesn’t mean much as I have been around only for three years). I am very thankful for the great team of helpers that made all this possible and I thank God for the wonderful weather, the great atmosphere and the protection from injuries and accidents.

I am thrilled to announce that from now on we will be publishing our Sunday Morning sermons online. You can click on them and listen to them online, or download the file to your hard disc and listen to it later. They are recorded in MP3-format. If you scroll down the page you will find them below the comments window. You can also access them directly by following the link: http://nazarene.ie/our-sermons/. I hope and pray that this new feature will turn out to be a blessing to many. Last Sunday I started a series on the story of Joseph and the introductory sermon is the first one that is available online. A sermon preached by Hannah Beers in April is also available. So feel free to go there and listen. May God bless you!

As I am writing this blog my left foot is protruding from under my desk, packed in what they call an “aircast walker”. My holidays had a somewhat different ending than originally planned: While playing football with some of my brothers and nephews at our annual family reunion in Germany I tore my Achilles Tendon. It was a classic rupture – while tackling my 17-year old nephew Tim I felt a sharp sudden pain in my left lower leg, just underneath the calf. It felt like somebody had sneaked up from behind and kicked me with all his might. Only when I looked around there was nobody who could have done it. This is the classic description of an Achilles Tendon Rupture as I was told. So instead of spending the rest of the Weekend with my extended family I had to go into hospital, undergo surgery and spend 5 days there. After that I was released with a brand new pair of blue crutches and my new boot – the “aircast walker” – which I will have to wear for at least 6 weeks. The pain is bearable and I am doing really well under the circumstances.

At this stage I am really looking forward to my summer break. But before I go away for four weeks, I’d like to let you know what’s going to be happening during the Summer here at the NAZ in Greystones. Currently I am preaching a little follow-up series on the Prodigal God, called “Living as Sons and Daughters of God”. The first Sermon on Pentecost Sunday had the title “The Spirit of Sonship”. We hope soon to be able to put them online so you can download them and listen to them.

The Prodigal God series ended this Sunday with the Topic of the Father’s feast. Jesus brilliantly ties in the story of the Prodigal Son into the context of the main theme of the bible – which is “Exile and Homecoming”. In the parable the younger son goes away into a far country where he squanders his inheritance and then starts longing for home. This is a picture of the human condition: We all are in exile in this world. Never truly at home. Our hearts long for love that cannot be lost, for escape from death, for the triumph of justice over wrong. But such things will never be found here. We are wanderers away from home. But God didn’t give up on us. He sent Jesus, his Son, to search for us, to die for us and to bring us home. The ultimate hope of the Christian Faith is a feast: “Many will come from the east and the west, and take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 8:11) Some day God will make this world home again, he will restore his fallen creation. By putting our trust in Jesus we become part of a new community of the redeemed who live their lives in the hope of that future feast. The Holy Communion is a regular reminder of that hope for us. With this grand perspective we ended the series of the Prodigal God culminating into a celebration of the Holy Communion.
